Cabinet reshuffle: New national executive members take oath of office

The mood at the swearing-in ceremony was light, but with the ongoing load shedding crisis, pressure is high for Ramaphosa’s new ministers.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo swore in the new members of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s national executive on Tuesday evening following the cabinet reshuffle on Monday.

NEW EXECUTIVE MEMBERS TAKE THE OATH

‘Do you choose the oath or affirmation,” Zondo asked each new member. He then asked if they considered their choice binding on their conscience before the new executive members promised to uphold the Constitution and serve South Africa to the best of their ability.

The mood was jovial, with ministers, deputy ministers and guests quick to break into a laugh. Ramaphosa’s chosen few also showed signs of nerves as they walked up to stand before Zondo.

The new deputy president Paul Mashatile was sworn in first. He then assumed his position to the left of the President and helped welcome each new executive member.

Ramaphosa’s grin appeared to be at its broadest when he rose to shake the hand of the Minister of Electricity in the Presidency, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. The new Minister mirrored the smile.

With no end in sight to the constant load shedding gripping South Africa, Tuesday, 7 March, might be the last time the man who is meant to lead the country out of the darkness wears such a bright smile in public.

After the ceremony, the members were taken away for a group photo and a closed briefing.
