“Foul” play at Nando’s Leicester as shortage of chicken causes outrage

One moment it’s there, the next it’s gone; this week we had a rare glimpse into the post-apocalyptic universe without Peri Peri chicken…

“Foul” play at Nando’s Leicest

What would happen if South Africa’s biggest chicken retailer ran out of… well, chicken?

The global chicken-lovers paradise known as Nando’s ran into quite a unique quagmire at one of their UK locations this week, when the demand for their finger-licking chicken outgrew any supply they could keep up with.

A Leicester branch of the South African food chain ran out of its key ingredient last Wednesday, Peri Peri chicken – causing disappointment with its clientele as well as considerable outrage in the Twittersphere.

“I don’t want to cause mass hysteria but @NandosUK in Leicester has run out of chicken,” one user reported, engaging others with tweets in response, such as “I’m still coming to terms with what happened.”

Nando’s apologised for the blunder and explained that among other reasons, the shortcoming was due to the roll-out of its new online ordering facility, which turned out to be a greater success than had been expected.

The company, which usually likes to stir things up with its viral ad campaigns, has been working around the “cluck” to get things back in order – but can you imagine the mass hysteria that would ensue if the same thing happened to Nando’s in, say, Mamelodi, Brakpan or Gugs?
