Elon Musk voted the ‘most overrated’ CEO by his peers

Entrepreneur billionaire Elon Musk has been ranked the most overrated CEO in America for a second consecutive year.

The Fortune survey asked hundreds of CEOs to rank their peers according to who they thought were the most overrated, and underrated.

Two years of being the most overrated CEO

According to Business Insider, Elon Musk scored 399 votes while Disney CEO Bob Iger was the runner-up, receiving 302 votes.

The tag of America’s most overrated CEO in America is a title that Musk now holds for a second consecutive year.

Fortune published the results on Wednesday but did not specify exactly how many CEOs had responded to the survey.

Microsoft chief Satya Nadella was annouced as the most underrated CEO, receiving 274 votes. This is a title Nadella has now held for eight consecutive years.

Overly ambitious targets

Musk runs multiple companies, from electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla to the rocket and space-exploration company SpaceX. To add to his busy schedule, Musk purchased social media platform Twitter in 2022, which he later renamed X.

Musk has been hailed for revolutionising these industries, but also criticised for setting overly ambitious targets.

In 2017 Musk claimed that SpaceX would send its first crewed mission to Mars in 2024, but has repeatedly pushed back this timeline. In 2021, he pushed the projected date to 2026.

In 2022 Musk commented on X that humans would probably only reach Mars in 2029.

Meanwhile, a judge in the US state of Delaware this week voided Elon Musk’s $56 billion compensation package, siding with a Tesla shareholder who claimed the entrepreneur was overpaid. Read more on that story here.
