According to a report in Sunday’s City Press newspaper, Phumulo Masualle, the Eastern Cape premier, confirmed that ANC branches have called for President Jacob Zuma to step down as party leader.

The premier did, however, make it clear that despite these calls from certain factions, it does not mean that these views are shared across the province.

“It is only the beginning. We are not yet finished. As a provincial executive committee, we have taken a view that we are not going to put the cart before the horse. Let that engagement proceed. It will culminate at a point where we will converge as a province and take a view,” the premier was quoted as saying by the City Press.

On Monday, there will be a public display of rebellion from within the ANC as an #OccupyLuthuliHouse protest is set to take place outside the ANC’s headquarters, all supporting the call for the president to step down.

City Press reports:

The Eastern Cape call follows several ANC meetings – held last weekend in Port Elizabeth and East London – which were attended by party heavyweights, including secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Siyabonga Cwele and Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba.
