Nhlanhla Nene has reportedly been approached by the Hawks to testify against Gordhan
The Hawks are trying everything to build their case against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
A report in the Sunday Times over the weekend said that the Hawks approached former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene to ask him to testify against Pravin Gordhan.
The meeting apparently took place on Thursday last week and the Hawks asked Nene to turn state witness. He was reportedly asked to testify about a covert unit operating within South African Revenue Services (Sars), while he was finance minister.
Sunday Times report that Nene has agreed to do so while Nene himself says he is not at liberty to comment and could not confirm or deny anything.
According to treasury insiders, it’s unlikely that Nene will testify against Gordhan given their close relationship dating back to when Nene served as his deputy between 2009 and 2014.
Oupa Magashula, the former Sars commissioner, was apparently also approached to turn state witness, but he denied the request.
