Durban heist: One dead and nine injured

On Tuesday morning, in the Durban CBD, there was a cash-in-transit heist which left one man dead and nine injured.

In the Durban CBD, a cash-in-transit heist resulted in the shooting death of one individual and serious injuries to seven street vendors.

The accident happened at the end of Victoria Street, Tuesday morning.

According to Garrith Jamieson, the spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, soon after 9:40 am they received calls of a shooting and a car collision in Russell Street, right after Victoria Street.

Jamieson claimed that the situation was in complete disarray when paramedics arrived.

How many died in the heist?

He claimed that the culprits had allegedly committed a cash-in-transit heist and had then began shooting at random.

“Unfortunately, one person believed to be a shop owner had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and he has been declared deceased at the scene,” he said.

The CIT vehicle then took a wrong turn and ran into numerous roadside sellers.

It is unknown if the deceased was a participant in the crime or a bystander.

How many were injured?

According to witnesses, the suspects left their car behind and escaped the area using a cab.
The amount taken from the CIT vehicle is unknown.

Seven vendors and one taxi driver, who each suffered injuries ranging from mild to critical, were all stabilized on the spot by various ambulance services before being sent to surrounding hospitals for the additional care they needed, according to Jamison.

According to Jamieson, one of the guards had moderate injuries and was being treated by paramedics skilled in advanced life support.

Police are still investigating.
