A man will appear in court on Thursday morning after his arrest in connection with a brutal double murder that took place in Quarry Heights, Durban, earlier this week.

Two gunmen stormed a house on Mpungushe Road and killed two people on Sunday 8 August, with another person injured in the shootout that ensued.

Quarry Heights double murder suspect in court

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Captain Nqobile Gwala, said in a statement issued on Thursday that police tracked down the 23-year-old suspect on Tuesday after an investigation was launched into the brazen killings.

He – along with another suspect who remains at large – is accused of opening fire on the four occupants of the house after kicking down the door.

“It is alleged that on 8 August 2021 at Mpungushe Road in Quarry Heights, four people were in a house when two men kicked the door open. The suspects shot two men, one died at the scene and the other died on arrival at the hospital. A bullet grazed the third victim while the fourth escaped unharmed,” said Gwala.

The culprits then fled the scene.

The deceased were identified as 30-year-old Mthandeni Mpofana and 46-year-old Mxolisi Gida.

‘More arrests imminent’

Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened at Greenwood Park SAPS, and detectives immediately initiated an investigation into the killings

“[Detectives] followed all possible leads regarding the suspects involved in the case,” said Gwala. She said that efforts to track down the culprits led to the 23-year-old man’s arrest on Tuesday 10 August, after the suspect was traced and arrested at the KwaMashu Hostel.

“More arrests are imminent as investigation unfolds,” added Gwala.

The man is set to appear before the Durban Magistrates Court this morning charged with  the double murder and two counts of attempted murder.
