Calls are mounting for President Cyril Ramaphosa to be dethroned for ‘lying to the public’ over Lindiwe Sisulu’s apology.

Lindiwe Sisulu’s comments against the South African judicial system were dramatic enough to prompt controversy and it seems as if her alleged apology following a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa have done nothing but stir the pot.

Certainly, the statement issued by the Presidency on Thursday declaring that the Tourism Minister had not only apologised but retracted her controversial comments turned heads.

Sisulu’s move to distance herself from Ramaphosa’s statement has further provoked the situation and raised questions over the legitimacy of the President’s comments on the matter entirely.

Calls for Ramaphosa to be impeached

Indeed, there have now been opinions raised that Ramaphosa’s statement was far from the truth of this sensitive matter. Economic Freedom Fighters’ Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is amongst those who feel that the President had ultimately lied to the nation.

Taking to his official social media page, Ndlozi called for the President to face the music for ‘lying to the public’.

“A President lying to the public is a cause for impeachment. It was at the Zondo Commission regarding deployment policies of the ANC. Now it is about Sisulu? The other year it was about the son’s business with BOSASA… It has to stop!”

President takes Minister on over ‘attack on judiciary’

It appears as if Sisulu couldn’t justify her opinions, however controversial, to Ramaphosa himself. The Presidency confirmed that the Minister has affirmed her support for the same judiciary she criticised.

“Minister Sisulu conceded that her words were inappropriate. Minister Sisulu retracts this statement and affirms her support for the judiciary.”

Sisulu’s remarks on the situation were included in the statement, to add insult to her very public injury.

“I accept that my column has levelled against the judiciary and African judges in particular unsubstantiated, gratuitous and deeply hurtful comments. I retract unequivocally my hurtful comments. I recognise that many women and men judges past and present have served their country in the judiciary with dedication and patriotism and some have made sterling sacrifices in the fight against apartheid and colonialism.I apologise for and regret the hurt I have caused the judiciary.”
