Back to school: Parents FRUSTRATED as children still not placed

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says less than 600 learners are in the process of being placed at schools in the province

Some parents are at their wits end as their children have still not been placed in schools, even as pupils have already started the 2022 academic year.

Learners in inland provinces returned to the classroom on 12 January 2022, but the process hasn’t exactly been smooth all around for the Department of Basic Education, due to issues of placement.

Parents, mostly in Gauteng are frustrated with the department – they’re complaining that their children have either not been placed or were designated a school outside of their feeder zone, despite some of them having applied on time.

One Pretoria father tells The South African his son was accepted at a high school which is within their feeder zone, while his daughter was allocated a school which is more than 23 kilometres away.

“I work in Centurion, which means I have to travel quite early to get there. The school they designated my daughter is out of my way and way too far. Not to mention that it will completely inconvenience us financially. Panyaza (Gauteng Education MEC) needs to do something about this and fast,” he said.


The placement issue at schools is certainly not lost on the Gauteng Department of Education as MEC Panyaza Lesufi says they are in the process of assisting 596 Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils who are experiencing the dilemma.

“We are aware that our District Offices are pressured with parents who seek assistance on Late applications, and those who are unhappy with schools they were offered. Our officials are working tirelessly to assist all parents. We also wish to appeal to the public not to threaten officials with violence, it is really unfair to them”

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga had previously urged parents to be at ease and assured them that all learners will be allocated schools, no matter what. She called on them to cooperate with their respective district officials in seeing to it that the matter gets resolved.

“We will continue to work with our provinces to ensure that we place all unplaced learners as a matter of urgency.  We however, implore parents and guardians to accept the schools in which their learners are placed.  When schools have reach their maximum capacities, further admissions become impossible,” she said.
