The WHO’s chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, insists that countries should have acted several weeks beforehand, although it has been three years since the WHO first described the situation as a ‘pandemic’.

World is now in a better position

The World Health Organization (WHO) Chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that the world is currently in a much better position compared to any time during the pandemic.

The WHO declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the highest level of alarm, on January 30, 2020, when fewer than 100 cases and no deaths had been reported outside of China.

However, it was only when Tedros declared the situation a pandemic on March 11 that year that many countries appeared to take the danger seriously.

“We declared a global health emergency to spur countries to take decisive action, but not all countries did.” Tedros stated.

He expressed his pleasure that the weekly number of reported deaths has been lower over the past four weeks for the first time since he declared Covid-19 a pandemic.

Nevertheless, he highlighted that more than 5,000 deaths reported per week were still too many for a disease that can be prevented and treated.

He went on to say that almost seven million deaths have been reported from Covid-19 three years later, though the actual number of deaths is believed to be significantly higher.

Despite being pleased with the current situation, Tedros insists that more must be done to ensure that the number of reported deaths continues to decline.
