City of Cape Town extends pensioners support application deadline

Cape Town extended the financial support application deadline for pensioners aged 60 and above to 30 November 2023.

The City of Cape Town has extended the deadline for pensioners aged 60 and older to apply for financial support until 30 November.

This includes residents receiving social grants or pensions up to R22,000 per month. Qualifying residents may receive a rates rebate and indigent benefits.

The city has increased its social support package for 2023/24

Councillor Siseko Mbandezi, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, encourages pensioners to seek support. The city has increased its social support package for 2023/24, processing over 250 applications daily.

“Applications for residents aged 60 and above remain valid until the next municipal property valuation in June 2026 or a supplementary valuation. Pensioners with a social grant or pension under R22,000 may receive a rates rebate from 10% to 100%.

“The assistance package, among South Africa’s highest, grants a 100% rebate to households earning under R7,500. Indigent benefits include free water and sewerage for those under the R7,500 income threshold,” said Mbandezi.

The City extends property value criteria for the Lifeline tariff, benefiting over 700,000 properties. Residents with a property value exceeding R500,000 may still qualify with a monthly income below R7,500.

Documentation needed from pensioners to apply

Pensioners and qualifying residents can apply for support through the City’s customer care offices or via email. Documentation includes proof of identification, financial statements, and property-related documents.

For indigent support, residents can visit the City’s website or contact the indigent relief email. Payment arrangements and a list of City facilities are available on the official website.
