Six armed cash-in-transit robbers were arrested on Wednesday shortly after a heist in Klerksdorp.

According to police spokesperson Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso, the cash-in-transit robbery happened on Wednesday morning.

“A G4S armoured vehicle was traveling on Tirisano road between Ellaton and Jouberton when a vehicle suddenly bumped into it, bringing it to an abrupt halt.”

He said the driver and the crew were allegedly forced out of the vehicle by gunmen with rifles.

“They allegedly disarmed and instructed them to lie on the ground before they blew up the safe.”

The armed men fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

“The multipronged team immediately launched a manhunt and the suspects were traced and arrested at a house in Neserhof within hours.”

Rikhotso said the six men were allegedly found in possession of an AK47, R5, LM5, and one of the 9mm pistols taken from the guards.

“Three vehicles with false registration plates were found at the house and the undisclosed amount of money was also recovered.”

Six suspects, aged between 37 and 53, will make their first appearance before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

They face charges of aggravated robbery, possession of explosives, possession of suspected stolen money, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The six men were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation assisted by members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Air wing.

Last month a cash-in-transit van was bombed in Welkom.

Four armed men bombed and robbed a G45 cash-in-transit van on the R73 near Welkom on 28 June 2021.

Police said four armed unknown African men attacked the van.

“The armed men were driving when they opened fire at the van. They continued to shoot at the van until it stopped.”

Police said the men took two firearms from the security officers and then bombed the van before they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount.
