An off-duty Metro Police cop was shot and wounded at a community road block in Halifax Road in Montclair, Durban. The cop’s car was allegedly riddled with bullets by civilians who formed a road block in the area on Wednesday night.

Citizens in KwaZulu-Natal, especially in suburbs have decided to take a stand against the uncontrollable rioting that has engulfed parts of South Africa. A series of videos posted online show various communities arming themselves up, protecting stores and businesses from the swathes of looters.

METRO POLICE HEAD CONDEMNS ‘ATTACK’

Durban metro police head, Steve Middleton, said the vigilante group has no right to limit access to any area. Middleton also shared a picture of the cop and his car that was shot at.

“To All Communities, as much as what you have a right to CPF structures through legislation, You have no right to do this to a Metro Police Colleague. You have no right to block Public roads. This is illegal. You have no right to limit access to any area. You have no right to determine where people can travel.

“You have no right to determine where people shop. Open up Your public road barricades immediately, there are legislated procedures you can follow, but you have no right to limit access and egress to any area.”

COMMUNITY ROAD BLOCKS SPARK RACIAL TENSIONS

Police Minister Bheki Cele has condemned the racial tensions that seemed to have rocked the Phoenix area saying it will prove to be a problem in both the medium and long term.

While the circumstances remain unclear at this point, it is believed that the hostilities were fuelled by armed residents who formed vigilante groups to prevent looting. Residents in Phoenix and neighbouring Zwelisha informal settlement have been at loggerheads over the past few days and at the heart of it is the ongoing riots.

“People have lost their lives. We have lost 15 people here. One thing that we as police have to work on at all costs is that people who murder other people will have to be arrested. That cannot be compromised”
