PhDs: Honorary doctorate recipients don’t have to use the title ‘Dr’

The South African Association of PhDs says honorary doctorate recipients should not demand to be referred to as Dr as there is a difference between an academic and an honorary doctorate. 

This comes as the Department of Higher Education recently confirmed that the Trinity International Bible University, which has conferred honorary doctorates to some of the country’s public figures, is not registered. Additionally, it is not authorised to offer any qualifications.

SA ASSOCIATION OF PHDS WEIGHS IN ON HONORARY DOCTORATES

In the wake of the increasing number of public figures receiving honorary doctorates, the SA Association of PhDs says recipients should not demand to be called “Dr”.  

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, the association’s Avela Majavu said there are only two doctors in South Africa: a medical doctor and a doctor who obtained their PhD academically. 

Majavu said that in an academic doctorate, you delve into work-related research and have to defend your qualifications. This rigorous process entails years of dedicated study and completing a substantial doctor thesis or dissertation. In contrast, in an honorary doctorate, people are recognised by universities or societies for their impact. 

“This has caused a lot of confusion because everyone wants to be a doctor without putting in all the hard work. An honourable doctorate only acknowledges the work that an individual does in society and is not a degree,” Majavu emphasised. 

DEPARTMENT PREVIOUSLY WARNED BOGUS INSTITUTION

Following confirmation that the Trinity International Bible University is a bogus institution, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said they had written to the bogus institution before, warned them about continuing to operate illegally, and asked them to regularise their operations.

In addition, Nzimande said they have also asked the Council on Higher Education (CHE) for guidance on how honorary PhDs should be offered and by whom.

“As the Department, we have nothing against Trinity International Bible University or the celebrities they have chosen to honour.

“We are, however, deeply disturbed by the persistent disregard for the regulations by the management of Trinity International Bible University. The Department is considering more comprehensive and decisive action against Trinity International Bible University and all other individuals or institutions who continue to undermine the Department’s regulations,” Nzimande reiterated.
