Babita Deokaran, 53, who was employed by the Gauteng Department of Health, was shot multiple times outside her home in Mondeor, Johannesburg on Monday morning 23 August 2021. She later succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which is looking into personal protective equipment (PPE) irregularities, confirmed on Tuesday that Babita Deokaran was one of its witnesses in the investigation.

WILL BABITA DEOKARAN’S DEATH AFFECT PPE INVESTIGATIONS?

Speaking to SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, it was revealed that Babita Deokaran was one of the witnesses in the PPE investigations.

According to Kganyago, she was one of more than 300 different witnesses. He went on to say that the SIU would cooperate with the police and give them space to do their work to get to the bottom of the killing.

When asked if Babita Deokaran’s death would affect the PPE investigations in any way, Kganyano said it would not. He added that the SIU is at the “tail end” of the investigation and are in the process of finalising reports.

“The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) cannot, at this stage, link or associate the murder of [the] Gauteng Health official with any of its ongoing PPE investigations,” the SIU said on Twitter.

MURDERED OFFICIAL WAS PART OF THE FINANCIAL TEAM

While Babita Deokaran was employed by the Gauteng Department of Health, she was employed as Chief Director: Financial Accounting at the GDOH and at times acted as the Chief Financial Officer.

Gauteng MEC for Health Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi, in a statement, said she rose up the ranks in the public service, in the last three decades, after she joined as an Accounting Clerk.

According to police spokesperson Kay Makhubela, Babita Deokaran had just dropped her child off at school before the shooting. She was waiting for the gate outside her home to open when she was shot multiple times in the upper body.

No arrests have been made as yet, however, anyone with further information, that may help police, is urged to call their nearest police station or 0860-0101-11.
