UPDATE: The 2022 online admissions website is back up and running. GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said technicians worked tirelessly and managed to resolve the matter earlier than expected. Parents and guardians are urged to continue making applications.

Parents and guardians, if you’ve been trying to access the 2022 online admissions website for a child but are unable to gain access, it’s because there has been an emergency shutdown. The Gauteng Education Department (GDE) made the announcement on Tuesday 17 August.

2022 ONLINE ADMISSIONS WEBSITE WILL SHUT DOWN, HERE’S WHY

According to the GDE, the 2022 Online Admissions website (www.gdeadmissions.gov.za) will shut down for the next 48 hours due to an emergency fix that has to be urgently applied to the system.

This means that parents and guardians who are applying under the current Phase 1 application period will not be able to access the website from Tuesday, 17 August 2021, until further notice.

“Applications will not be affected by this emergency, and parents may resume applying once we give notice of the website going live again. Our technicians are working around the clock to resolve this emergency accordingly. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” said Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

TWO-PHASE APPROACH

GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said the 2022 online admissions are taking place through a two-phase approach to improve administrative efficiency. So if you’re not sure about the difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2 online applications, we’ve got you covered.

Phase 1 applications, which started on 10 August 2021, will end on 3 September 2021 and are for parents and guardians whose children are currently in Grade 7 at a public school in Gauteng and will be going to Grade 8 in 2022.

Phase 2 applications will begin on 13 September 2021 and will focus on parents and guardians whose children will be going to Grade 1 or Grade 8 in 2022 but are not in a public school in Gauteng. This will end on 8 October 2021.

The South African recently reported that in just four days, there had been more than 100 000 successful Grade 8 applications via the 2022 online admissions website but alas, that has now been put on hold.
