‘Dream come true’: Durban matriculant thanks dad after he’s accepted at Yale

Hilton College 2023 matric learner Khanya Mhlongo will study economics at Yale, vowing to use his skills to empower others in SA.

Hilton College matric learner Khanya Mhlongo has thanked his hardworking father for investing in his education. This, after he was accepted into the US IVY league university, Yale.

The KwaZulu Natal private all-boys, all-boarding school institution shared the news.

KZN TEEN TO STUDY AT YALE

In a statement issued on their social media account, Hilton College shared their pride that 2023 matriculant Khanya Mhlongo had been offered a place at Yale University, located in Connecticut in the US.

The 2023 deputy head boy would be studying economics.

The teen – who has already posted his resume on LinkedIn, which is jam-packed with vacation learning programmes – thanked his father for his education opportunities.

He said: “First, I thank God for this opportunity. All I have achieved is due to his generosity and grace in my life more than due to my own merit.

“It was Christ who blessed me with a father who worked hard to send me to Hilton, with teachers who regularly went above and beyond the call of duty, and with friends who believed in me when I doubted myself”.

He added: “Yale would be a dream come true! But I will always miss Hilton and cherish the memories I made there.”

‘AFRICA IS BOOMING WITH POTENTIAL’

Khanya Mhlongo will begin his studies at Yale in August. In the interim, he is looking for more learning experiences. 

He posted on LinkedIn: “While I wait, I am looking for opportunities to job shadow, work, and intern. There is no learning like learning through experience.”.

The teen – who has a passion for finance, economics, and business – has vowed to return to SA.

He added of his Yale studies: “Africa is booming with potential but requires people who understand financial markets to unlock that potential.”

WHEN DOES MATRIC RESULTS COME OUT?

According to the Department of Education, the Independent Examinations Board [private schools]  results will be released early on Thursday, 18 January, and National Senior Certificate [pulic schools] results will come out the following day.
