The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been rocked by recent revelations of fraud within the social grant system, which could amount to thousands of grants that should not have been paid out to false grant ‘recipients’.

Social grant payments were reportedly made out to false beneficiaries, whose fake details gave them access to grant funds they were never entitled to. An investigation has been launched into just how large-scale the problem could have been.

SASSA investigating cases of national grant fraud

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) are investigating cases of large-scale social grant fraud that might have affected thousands of potential grant payments.

Social grants might have been claimed by recipients that shouldn’t have been on the system, adding undue pressure to the social grant system that is meant to be for those in need of assistance.

An investigation has been launched into how large the problem could have been, and what can be done to prevent future, similar issues.

SASSA: Social grants paid to ‘deceased’ recipients

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is investigating cases of social grant fraud, where grants were reportedly paid to recipients that should never have received them.

An official report says that approximately 74 000 deceased recipients were mistakenly paid a social grant they weren’t entitled to.

This could be a major problem for the future of the social grant system, with citizens and watchdog groups calling for an assessment of the current system.

Where to report SASSA fraud

Social grant fraud should be reported to SASSA, through their helpline (+27 80 060 1011) or via their website.

Reports can also be made to the South African Police Service (SAPS). All forms of grant fraud are a crime.

Reporting fraud is important. It helps the problems rise to the surface where they can be fixed by the relevant authorities.
