Rebel Wilson’s weight loss journey caught the world’s attention. The Australian actress lost almost 36kg during her “Year of Health” in 2020, and the reception of her weight loss has been intriguing. Although she has been praised on her journey, she mentioned in a previous interview that the world has become obsessed with her weight loss.

The Pitch Perfect actress dubbed 2020 her “Year of Health”. In February this year, she shared that she had already lost 60 pounds (27 kilograms).

In a new interview with People, the 41-year-old actress said she had prioritised her health for the first time ever.

She has been using the Mayr Method, an eating plan developed by Dr Franz Xaver Mayr in the 1920s. She did however mention that she emotionally eats every now and then.

“I’m not perfect, like, I still emotionally eat at times, there’s stressful things that still go on in my life and in my work that can be high pressure, … but I’m not perfect. I’ve [just] learned to manage things.”

“I’ve been so grateful to make these lasting changes. It just makes me feel overall better and I’m still the exact same person, just a healthier version.”

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Wilson shared that after going through her health transformation, she has been in touch with her “inner siren”. She mentioned that her weight loss changed the way the world saw her.

“In 2019, I had like four movies come out, two of which I produced and one, Jojo Rabbit, which got nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.”

“Yet, I get more press the following year when I do nothing except lose weight?”

“People are so obsessed with it. But I get it. Oprah is one of my heroes. She’s certainly struggled with eating issues and I would always watch her episodes when she spoke about that.”

While Rebel Wilson herself has acknowledged that the world became obsessed with her weight loss journey, it might be important to investigate why?

Jennifer O’Connell of The Irish Times writes: “The volume and tone of the 2.9 million headlines – plus the 17 000 comments and 1.1 million likes on her latest Instagram post – seemed to imply she had won an Olympic medal or found a cure for Covid-19 or rescued raccoons from burning to death in the Californian fires, rather than simply changed her dress size.”

“It’s depressing how much of the coverage of Rebel Wilson’s weight loss invoked the terms ‘shrinking’ and ‘unrecognisable’ as compliments. Since when did ‘shrinking’ become a desirable beauty standard?”
