Chakalaka makes everything better! It spices up an otherwise bland dish and it can even brighten a lockdown day. This chakalaka recipe will make you forget about any other brand of chakalaka. No more store-bought chakalaka for you after tasting this recipe.

Packed with flavour and spiciness, this much-loved South African relish goes well with bread, stews or as a relish with a braai. This chakalaka recipe is also delicious with traditional South African putu pap.

Chakalaka is 100% vegan and gluten-free making it a safe option for almost any type of diet you may follow.  You may just find yourself adding a generous spoon of chakalaka to all your dishes for that extra South African flavour. Chakalaka is delicious warm or cold, but since we are now in the heart of winter, we may all opt for the warm option.

  • 1 teaspoon 1 smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon 1 turmeric

  • 2 teaspoons 2 garlic, crushed

  • 2 tablespoons 2 olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon 1 ginger, crushed

  • 1 1 onion, chopped

  • 2 teaspoons 2 curry mix

  • 2 2 chillies, chopped

  • 2 2 peppadews, chopped

  • 3 cups 3 cabbage, chopped

  • 3 cups 3 carrots, grated

  • 1 1 green pepper, chopped (optional)

  • 1 tin 1 chopped tomatoes

  • 2 2 Canderel sticks 


  • In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat.
  • Add the onion, give it a minute or two.
  • Stir in all the spices; turmeric, garlic, ginger, smoked paprika and curry mix. Continue stirring for about a minute or two to let the flavour intensify.
  • Add the tomatoes, peppadews, carrots and cabbage.
  • Simmer for about five minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burns.
  • Adjust for seasoning, add Canderel.
  • Serve warm or cold.
