Clever South African initiative to get #1000GirlsOnBikes gains traction

Get fit and give back – it’s a win-win.

Clever South African initiativ

The #1000GirlsOnBikes initiative, powered by Discovery, Dimension Data and Qhubeka, gives Vitality members the chance to give back, whilst getting fit.

What is #1000GirlsOnBikes?

For the month of May, Discovery Vitality members are being offered an additional weekly reward for getting active.

It is called Vitality MoveToGive, and members are encouraged to donate towards a bicycle to support girls without transport to enable them to get to school safely. Owning a bicycle will also allow the girls easier access to healthcare because of the independence having their own bicycle transport will afford them.

Qhubeka believes that “The empowerment of women and girls is key to social transformation”. By helping girls get to school safely, Vitality members are effecting social change by enabling the girls’ future earnings to be higher. It is estimated that for every year of school a girl attends, her future income will increase by 10 to 20%.

The future of the #1000GirlsOnBikes

The lives of the girls in the programme will be impacted forever, as they are able to attend school more easily, which means less absenteeism and better school results, which will impact not only their futures but the futures of their immediate families.

How you can contribute

First, you’ll need to download the Discovery app. Then, until 27 May 2018, select MoveToGive rewards instead of Vitality’s weekly and surprise rewards and help to change the lives of 1000 girls.

Any redeemed rewards will be paid to Qhubeka by Vitality after 27 May. Vitality will pay Qhubeka and Qhubeka will channel the funds collected towards the sourcing of bicycles as part of the #1000GirlsOnBikes campaign. Qhubeka will manage the distribution of the bicycles, thus ensuring the development and improvement of the lives of 1000 girls and their families.
