Mashata: Who was the slain DJ and Sundowns stadium announcer?

Murdered DJ Peter ‘Mashata’ Mabuse has been described as a peaceful guy. Here are five things to know about the entertainer and businessman.

Tributes and messages of condolences are pouring in following the murder of DJ Peter “Mashata” Mabuse.

The popular soul music DJ and all-round entertainer, was shot and killed in Soshanguve, north-west of Pretoria, in the early hours of Sunday, 21 April.

DJ MASHATA’S PASSING

News of his passing were confirmed to The South African by Gauteng police spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza. She revealed that murder and attempted murder dockets have been opened.

“[The] shooting involved two men aged 46 and 45 years during the early hours of today [Sunday]. One victim died in hospital while the other was injured,” she said.

“The two victims were driving near TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) in Soshanguve when shots were fired at their vehicle. The suspects fled and police are following several leads.”

Metro FM’s Paul Mtirara wrote on X: “This can’t be! This is not what I could have ever imagined… why! how could this have ever happened this great individual! RIPSIR”

Podcaster Hazel Kotu saud: “I learned and fell in love with the song All For You by Glenn Jones because of Peter Mashata. May your precious soul rest in peace.”

While @superb_gabstar said: “No guys #mashata was such a trouble-free guy who would do comedy segments for free while organisers were busy sorting out unexpected misfortunes. Always kept to himself, but also ready to bring a smile to one’s face”Shot & killed” is a title that his last song doesn’t deserve.”

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE LATE ENTERTAINER

1. Born in Gauteng – Mashata was born in Hammanskraal, Gauteng, and grew up in Mabopane – a residential township situated in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, to the north of Pretoria in Gauteng.

2. A businessman – in 2012, he co-founded an entertainment company called Mashata-Tainment. The company runs various comedy clubs in Tshwane, including hosting and managing comedy events throughout the year. It also supplies MCs, live bands and comedians for entertainment at corporate, private and government events.

3. Why the name “Mashata” – during his interview on Kaya FM in December 2022, he revealed that he got the Mashata nickname because he was very loud at school and in the streets, but was very quiet and struggled to express himself at home because he was fearful of his father.

4. Mamelodi Sundowns stadium announcer – besides his love for music, the DJ was also a huge football fanatic. He worked as a Mamelodi Sundowns stadium announcer for the club’s home matches. Previously, he was employed by Orlando Pirates in the same role.

5. DJ Sumbody’s friend — Mashata was close friends with slain musician DJ Sumbody — real name Oupa John Sefoka. The MC was also the programme director at Sumbody’s funeral. The Ayepyep Lifestyle co-owner was gunned down in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022 – the morning of his annual All White picnic. In January this year, another one of DJ Sumbody’s friends, DJ Vettys, was shot and rushed to the hospital.
