Kristen Stewart was seen fighting back tears after she received a five minute standing ovation for her role as Princess Diana in the premiere of royal biopic Spencer last week…

The film – which portrays fictionalised account of what transpired when the royal made the decision to split from husband Prince Charles —  premiered internationally at the Venice Film Festival to a glowing reception.

Kristen and the film’s producer Pablo Larraín were both present at the premiere and were seen embracing during the closing credits, while viewers at the Sala Grande auditorium cheered on.

The shy actress did her best to avoid contact with the cameras as she hurriedly wiped her face and quickly moved to sit down, her hands moving awkwardly.

Kristen Stewart’s role as the conflicted royal has received rave reviews from critics around the world. She’s even been tipped for an Oscar nomination.

But the 31-year-old star claims playing the larger than life character was a daunting task.

Speaking at a press conference prior to the premiere, she told reporters: “The really sad thing is that Diana, as normal and casual and disarming her air was, felt so isolated and lonely. She made everyone else feel accompanied, and bolstered by a beautiful light – and all she wanted was to have it back.

“It’s the idea of somebody being so desperate for connection, and able to make other people feel so good, feeling so bad on the inside.”

Kristen added that she was also drawn to Diana’s “undeniable penetrative energy”. “We haven’t had many of those people throughout history. Diana stands out as a sparkly house on fire.”

Kristen Stewart made a number of fashionable appearances at the Venice Film Festival – which have even been hailed as a “ode” to Princess Diana, claim fashion critics.

During the Spencer photocall, the slender star sported an edgy short black tweed Chanel romper. At the premiere of the film, Kristen wore a mint-green top and trousers set from the brand’s FW21 Couture collection. She also rocked a diamond Chanel choker.

And during a Chanel dinner party, Kristen also took on her own interpretation of the classic brand – sporting a baggy pair of leather trousers with a white jacket.

Princess Diana was a fond fan of the French couture designer and was often seen wearing trademark pieces from their collections. However she infamously stopped wearing the brand in 1996, at the same time as her official divorce from Charles, over reports the Chanel logo reminded her of her painful past.

Designer Jayson Brundson, who worked with the princess during a charity event in Australia, claimed she told him of the decision: “’No, I can’t wear linked Cs, the double C.’ So I asked why, and she said, ‘It’s Camilla and Charles.'”
