It would appear that tech giant Elon Musk has chosen to simply ignore the backlash he received from thousands of South Africans over his tweet about Julius Malema chanting “Kill The Boer”. Earlier this week, the SpaceX and Tesla founder called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to take action against Malema who he said was promoting “genocide against white people” in South Africa.

While he ignored Malema’s crass response to his tweet, he has now headed online to condemn US newspaper The New York Times for their coverage on the matter.

Elon Musk has doubled down on his thoughts about the Kill The Boer struggle song which was chanted by the Economic Freedom Fighters’ Julius Malema at the party’s 10th birthday celebrations on Saturday 29 July this year.

The chant sparked outrage among South Africans who have called for action to be taken against Malema. It didn’t take long for the news to reach Musk who took to Twitter and wrote;

“They are openly pushing for genocide of white people in SA. Cyril Ramaphosa, why do you say nothing?”

To this Malema responded, “O bolela maspa (you are talking sh*).”

The sharp-tongued politician later told journalist in a press briefing that the South African-born billionaire is illiterate and should educate himself.

Meanwhile, Musk chose to ignore Malema and his thousands of supporters and has seemingly doubled down on his belief that the chant promotes white genocide.

Taking to Twitter on Friday evening, the 51-year-old slammed The New York Times’ coverage on the matter.

“Right-wing commenters claim that an old anti-apartheid chant is a call to anti-white violence, but historians and the left-wing politician who embraces it say it should not be taken literally,” the excerpt goes on to explain.

In his caption, Musk criticised the publication for “supporting calls for genocide”. Bizarrely, he also shared a link which he claims will allow people to remove the paywall on the publications articles.

Instant outrage

In less than an hour the post received 40 000 reactions and thousands of comments. Once again there was a back and forth about whether or not chanting “Kill the Boer, shoot the Boer” was inciting violence or simply a struggle song.

“Dear Elon, you can just call your father and ask him about the song instead of trying to push a false narrative,” a South African app user commented.

While another added, “It’s because New York Times journalists actually do research on the song and don’t just make up their own stories like you and the rest of them.”
