‘The next episode’: Dr Dre must now pay estranged wife R22m in legal fees

In addition to the R4.3 million monthly spousal support, Dr Dre also has to pay his estranged wife, Nicole Young, R22 million in legal fees.

According to a court ruling, American rapper Andre Romelle Young, popularly known by his stage name Dr Dre, has been ordered to pay R22 million in legal fees to his estranged wife Nicole Young as their divorce battle continues. 


The judge in the divorce case ruled that the rapper should pay his estranged wife a further $1.5 million (R22.1 million) in legal fees and costs after he already forked out $2 million (R29 million). 

The judge estimated that Nicole’s reasonable legal fees in the case at this point total to $3 million (R44.2 million). The rapper would now have to pay $1 million (R14.7 million) towards the balance of her fees and $500 (R7.3 million) in costs associated with the case as per the judge’s ruling. This equates to $1.5 million (R22 million).

Nicole Young, who is being represented by celebrity attorney Samantha Spector, previously said her legal fees were close to $4 million (R59 million). The court papers reflect that her legal tab can cost up to $1100 (R16 236) per hour. While the rapper is being represented by Anne Kiley, who also represents American actor Brad Pitt.

This follows the news of Dr. Dre being ordered to give Nicole Young R4.3 million in spousal support every month. In addition he must also pay for household costs that include security, insurance, gardening taxes, maintenance and more. The rapper will be accountable for all of these commitments until Nicole Young remarries, enters into a domestic partnership or the court orders otherwise.

Nicole Young first filed for divorce from Dr. Dre in 2020 after 24 years of marriage. The couple share two adult children Truice and Truly. The reason for their divorce was cited as “irreconcilable differences”.

Dr. Dre’s net worth is around $800 million (R11.8 billion). According to Page Six new court papers state he has assets worth $243 million (R3.5 billion).
