The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) confirmed media personality Somizi Mhlongo is taking some “time off” from Metro FM via a statement on Twitter, today (4 August).

This follows the allegations of abuse made against Somizi by his estranged husband, Mohale Motaung.

According to Metro FM’s line-up, Somizi hosts The Bridge alongside Dineo Ranaka and the Naked DJ and is popular for the Ask A Man segment.

The SABC confirmed that the Idols SA judge will be taking some time off from air. However, the broadcasting corporation states that this is by Somizi’s request and that the broadcaster just granted him permission.

“The SABC can confirm that @METROFMSA management met with Mr. Somizi Mhlongo and he has requested to take some time off from work. Management has granted Mr. Mhlongo permission to do so,” wrote SABC on Twitter.

Entertainment reporter Phil Mphela reported that as Somizi is a freelancer he is not getting paid during this break.

Although the SABC states that Somizi requested the time off, the broadcasting corporation did not turn a blind eye to the abuse allegations made against the media personality by his husband, actor Mohale Motaung, who claimed that Somizi physically abused him on several occasions. Mohale alleged that Somizi once broke his ribs and two of his teeth in a moment of rage at their home.

The SABC acknowledged the abuse accusations against Somizi, saying that they do not condone any acts of abuse and violence.

“The Corporation has also noted the comments on social media about Mr. Mhlongo and we would like to point out that the public service broadcaster does not condone any acts of abuse and violence,” wrote the SABC on Twitter.

Somizi vs Katlego Maboe

The announcement comes after Tweeps were calling for Somizi to be cancelled in the same way Katlego Maboe was when his cheating scandal was brought to light. When Metro FM posted that Somizi will be “taking your calls” on the Ask A Man segment, many Tweeps took to the comments to call out the radio station for going on as normal.
