The author of unauthorised biography Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, Andrew Morton claimed that a photo of the late Queen Elizabeth II and her heirs was the last straw for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Morton claims that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to quit their duties as senior working members of the royal family after seeing the photo of Queen Elizabeth II with the now King Charles, Prince William and Prince George.
The photo was released in 2020 and taken in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace.
“The royal couple suspected that the entire institution was conspiring against them. As they saw it, the evidence was all around them. The unspoken code was straightforward: the future of the monarchy was assured, with or without Meghan and Harry,” wrote Morton in the book.

Two days after the photo was released the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they were quitting their duties as senior working members of the royal family and were becoming financially independent. The pair then moved to Montecito, California with their son Archie (4) and daughter Lilibet (2).
Their decision to leave deepened a rift between Prince Harry and his brother Prince William. The rift got worse after the release of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare.
