Duduzane Zuma has opened up about his father, Jacob Zuma’s arrest which took place on 7 July 2021 when the 80-year-old former South African president handed himself over at the Estcourt Correctional Centre.

The 38-year-old ANC ward 11 chairperson spoke candidly about his views regarding his father’s arrest and health during his interview with DJ Sbu on the YouTube podcast Virtual Mkhukhu on The Hustler’s Corner SA channel on Monday 1 August.

Jacob Zuma was sentenced to 15 months last year for contempt of court and was released on medical parole on 5 September the same year. He is currently serving the remainder of his sentence at home due to his deteriorating health.

When DJ Sbu asked Duduzane about his father’s current physical well-being, he responded:

“Firstly, he’s 80 years old. He’s an old man. He’s an elder. And people romanticise with the idea that he’s still that guy he was when he was 60 or 40.

“An 80-year-old will have more complex health issues than normal and it’s been documented out there that he’s diabetic and he needs that level of care,” Duduzane explained.

He added that his father is, however, fighting fit and looks good for his age.

About Jacob Zuma’s arrest, Duduzane referred to it as a “strange phenomenon” as his father was also arrested during the apartheid regime on Robben Island in 1963.

“It must’ve been a surreal experience for him in 2021 to be spending time in a prison cell. He’s 80, diabetic. Locked up in 2021 & 50yrs ago on Robben Island. From the highest of politics to sitting on concrete.

When DJ Sbu asked Duduzane how the arrest made him feel, he replied, “I was very upset with it”.

“For me it’s very simple. They’ve been accusing him of whatever they’ve been accusing him of and he’s deployed his legal tactics and strategists to deal with it accordingly, right or wrong, the jury’s out.

“To put an 80-year-old man in prison for mumbo jumbo is unacceptable,” Duduzane said.

Although he was not in attendance, Jacob Zuma’s corruption trial returned to court on Monday 1 August. However, Judge Piet Koen adjourned proceedings to 17 October to allow the Constitutional Court to rule on his latest legal bid to remove Billy Downer as his prosecutor, IOL report.

In addition, the judge said that this date was a holding one depending on when the Constitutional Court would sit, and what the outcomes would be. The judge set November 7 as a provincial trial date, also depending on the outcome of Zuma’s appeal.

Zuma and his co-accused, French company Thales, face charges related to fraud, corruption and money laundering in connection with the Arms Deal that took place in the 1990s.
