The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has clear guidelines for declining a Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant application. Here are nine possible reasons and what remedial action you can take in the event of error.

Don’t just assume there has been a technical or human error. You must try to fully understand why your SASSA grant application was denied before you can remedy it correctly through the Department of Social Development (DSD).

1. INCOMPLETE APPLICATION

When you applied, your application may have been without important supporting documents. Go back to your application and ensure you provide accurate and complete information.

2. ALTERNATIVE INCOME

If your SASSA grant application was denied due to already having an income source, there’s nothing you can do about this. If your monthly income exceeds R595 per month you are exempt from receiving an SRD grant.

3. ALREADY A GRANT RECIPIENT

The SASSA SRD grant was introduced to assist the very destitute in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, anyone already receiving a social grant in any other form is not eligible for the R350 stipend.

4. VERIFICATION ISSUES

If there were any errors such as misspelt names, surnames in your application, this can lead to verification issues. Go back to your application and ensure your ID number, name, and surname exactly match your ID document.

5. OTHER GOVERNMENT BENEFITS

If your SASSA grant application was denied, if could be because you’re already receiving NSFAS, UIF or other government aid. Being part of these programs will exclude you from the R350 grant.

6. AGE LIMITS

The South African Social Security Agency is only mandated to supply SRD grants to individuals aged between 18 and 60.

7. FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY

SASSA has measures in place to prevent fraud and maintain the integrity of the system. If your application is associated with fraudulent activities, past or present, it may be declined.

8. RECORD DISCREPANCIES

A reason your SASSA grant application was denied may be the fact that the personal details you provided do not match the records of the Department of Home Affairs. Ensure all your paperwork and affairs are in order before continuing with the application.
