Speaking to TshisaLive, Gigi reflected on the evolution of SA hip-hop, mentioning that it has evolved quite a lot and she feels that there is more support going around in the industry.

“We’re finally being compared to the guys,” she said.

She also spoke about Nadia Nakai and Boity’s nominations in the best hip-hop album category at the SAMAs.

“If you look at the SA Music Awards this year, we had two women competing in the same category. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been the case. It’s nice to see women active in the industry.”

Gigi explained that she feels there aren’t many women in hip-hop because gatekeepers in the industry are mostly male. “I guess it is a biological thing where males will put each other first unless they believe they can benefit from a female act,” Gigi shared.

She went on to share that over the years, hip-hop has been used as a form of activism and so when women use their music for activism, “it doesn’t suit the male agenda” she boldy said.

The rapper believes that there aren’t enough women in entertainment that run things behind the scenes.

Gigi released her fourth studio album Mermaids and Stuff on 16 July. The 19-track album features some of Mzansi’s top talents including Nadia Nakai, Sho Madjozi, Manu WorldStar, Blaklez and 25K.

The lead single for Mermaids and Stuff is Feelin U featuring rapper Blxckie and Mi Casa.

Gigi shared that Feelin U is a remake of Mi Casa’s 2017 hit Feeling You and working with the group was amazing for her.

She wanted to feature someone legendary on her album thus, the Feelin U remake was born.
