The death toll has risen to at least 30 Eastern Cape initiates during the summer initiation season so far. The Eastern Cape, Traditional Affairs Department, said the MEC Zolile Williams and the Deputy Chairperson, during their visits, emphasized the involvement of parents and traditional nurses to safeguard the initiates since the death toll had risen to 30 and there are still three weeks to go before the Summer Initiation season closes. According to Williams, some parents are working with the government. However, they need to do more to mitigate risks associated with the custom. He said sixty-nine (69) people had been arrested for unlawful circumcision, deaths of Abakhwetha, and other suspected criminal activities.
