A bizarre video has been social media shake on Tuesday afternoon, as several protesters in Kokstad (KZN) managed to get a truck full of rocks and gravel to dump its load in the middle of the road.

The footage was shared by anti-crime advocate Yusuf Abramjee. He confirmed that the incident was holding up traffic heading on the road heading towards the N2 in Paddock, and drivers were advised to avoid the area as the clean-up operation got underway.

In the video, a group of men can be seen cheering and goading whoever it is behind the wheel to part with their load. The intentions are not exactly clear, and we haven’t been able to establish if the truck driver was forced into tipping the cargo, or if they were just taking part in the anarchy.

The clip shows a hold-up for about 30 seconds before the road is covered in rubble. Drivers are no longer able to get by the debris, which ends up blocking the main stretch of road between Sheppi and Kokstad. The towns are both near the border with the Eastern Cape, towards the south-west of the province.

Social media reacts

Twitter users weren’t best pleased with what they were seeing. Some bemoaned the apparent lawlessness of the situation, pleading for legal intervention. Others were just outright shocked by the damage:

The impromptu protest – allegedly related to poor service delivery in the area – unfolded just after midday on Tuesday. Authorities are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the chaos before releasing a more detailed statement.
