Online bookworms share their tips for managing migraines

Headaches can affect almost anybody, but when you are a keen reader, a migraine can be crippling as it takes away the joy of books.

Many people struggle with headaches in varying degrees daily.

However, when you are a reader, it can be particularly crippling as it takes away the joy of reading.

In a mini-survey on my Instagram profile (@carmens_book_nook), it was clear from those who responded that many in the reading community do struggle with chronic headaches. More than half of those who took part in the informal poll (58%) struggle on a regular basis.

Some have the occasional light headache that can be easily treated with over-the-counter tablets or powders.

However, others deal with more severe headaches that can be categorised as migraines.

These headaches often come not only with severe pain but also with nausea and extreme sensitivity to light.

This can limit your ability to do certain everyday activities like reading.

Readers’ migraine remedies

Readers suggest various remedies for migraines, ranging from more intense treatments like prescription medication to simple things like drinking enough water or getting enough sleep.

Another tip is to limit  time looking at screens or reading, but this is a real struggle for people who absolutely love reading.

Being a bookworm with chronic headaches is a challenge but fellow bookworms have one or two tips for those who also struggle with migraines.

1. Use a booklight

The booklight in this image is for sale on Amazon

Not only are these tiny book lights super cute, but they also limit the amount of light reaching your eyes by focussing a small, sufficient amount of light on the pages instead.

You get all sorts of book lights with different price brackets so there will definitely be a few that fit your budget.

2. Listen to an audiobook

Some days bring headaches that can only be treated with lying in bed in a dark room. This is when audiobooks will be your best friend. You can easily plug in your headphones, put on an audiobook and relax.

There are numerous audiobook websites and apps where you can download almost any book.

Audible, for example, is a great site for all things audiobook and can be downloaded as an app on your phone.

3. Optimise your reading time

For many students, some days are busy from dawn to dusk which leaves very little time in the day for reading.

While there are days which barely leave you with enough time to grab lunch, let alone read, most days leave you with a chunk of at least 10 minutes which you can use as you wish.

Instead of scrolling through Twitter or Instagram while you are waiting at the dentist or going on Facebook when you are in an Uber, try instead to read a few pages of your current book.

The same applies to people who struggle with headaches. You can optimise your reading time on days where you don’t have a headache and try to get as much reading done while your head is pain free.

So, next time you know have a few minutes to spare, bring a book along and capitalise on a few precious reading moments.
