Swallows boss Komphela: I’d be a fool to forget Sundowns

New Swallows FC coach Steve Komphela says he would be a fool to forget what Mamelodi Sundowns have done for him.

Incoming Swallows FC coach Steve Komphela says he would a fool and a lunatic if he would forget what Mamelodi Sundowns did for him at Chloorkop.

The former Bafana Bafana skipper, Komphela is preparing for life away from Sundowns as he was unveiled as Swallows’ new coach on Sunday.

Speaking to Robert Marawa’s Marawa Sports Worldwide on Monday evening, Komphela explained that he is already feeling emotional when thinking of facing Masandawana next season.


The newly appointed Dube Birds mentor, Komphela revealed he will always be grateful for what Sundowns have done for him.

However, he has moved on and is ready for his next challenge as a coach of the Soweto-based Swallows.

After spending three trophy-laden seasons with Sundowns, Swallows surprised many when they announced the former Kaizer Chiefs coach, Komphela.

“Sundowns has given me so much respect and it would take a lunatic to not take the right processes in looking for advice,” he told Marawa on 947.

“They have been extremely kind to me and I did consult with the chairman and the president.”

Looking at the upcoming DStv Premiership season, Komphela will guide Swallows in the MTN8 against his protégé, Rulani Mokwena and he says it will be tough to face his former employers, Sundowns.

“It will be a difficult one and it reminded me of the scenario I had at Maritzburg where I played them in the first game at Chiefs and they were winning 2-0 and we had to find a way to win that match,” he added.

“Now I’m in the same situation with Sundowns, a club that treated me so well. But I need to take this moment to thank the Sundowns supporters, they have been unbelievable. ( ”


In addition, Swallows boss David Mogashoa also shared why he decided to appoint Komphela who will now work with Musa Nyatama.

Mogashoa’s decision came as a shock just after he announced that Nyatama will take over the touchline on a permanent basis.

He said he doesn’t have sleepless nights about changing his mind based on the promises he made to the former Sundowns and Orlando Pirates star midfielder, Nyatama.

As the Dobsonville-based Swallows were involved in the bitter relegation battle, Nyatama came to the club’s rescue and eventually guided the club to a comfortable top-eight finish.

“I don’t regret what I said about Musa because at the time I felt he was the right person, but when Steve became available, I also saw it as an opportunity for coach Musa to learn from Steve and also for him to further his studies in when it comes to coaching,” said Mogashoa.
