Harry Maguire again made headlines for the wrong reasons after scoring an own-goal for England against Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday.

Although England won the match 3-1, the Manchester United defender was the talking point after the match.

Maguire has had a tough start to the 2023/24 English Premiership under manager Erik ten Hag. The tall defender fell down the pecking order and is yet to feature for Man United this season.

Maguire defended by Gareth Southgate

Maguire turned Andy Robertson’s low cross into his own net past Aaron Ramsdale to give Scotland a lifeline. Luckily for him, England scored their third goal to seal the game 3-1. After the game, Maguire received backlash from fans but his manager Gareth Southgate hit back.

“From a Scotland fan’s point of view, I get it and I have absolutely no complaints with what they did,” the England boss said.

“It is a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly.

“I think our fans recognised ‘OK, there might be a bit of heat from our own supporters but we’re not going to have it from others getting into him’.

“But it’s a joke. I’ve never known a player treated the way he is – not by the Scottish fans, by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is,” Southgate was quoted on Independent.

“He’s been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful England team for decades. He’s been an absolutely key part of that,” said the English coach.

Nothing seems to be going right for Maguire at the moment, following on from him being stripped of the captaincy at United and a mistake for Ukraine’s leveller on Saturday.
