World Cup 2022: Gomes and Siwela get second ‘call-up’

South African referee Victor Gomes and assistant referee Zakhele Siwela have both been handed their second FIFA World Cup ‘call-ups’.

South African referee Victor Gomes and assistant referee Zakhele Siwela have both been handed their second FIFA World Cup ‘call-ups’.

Having officiated in a game between France and Australia, the South African refereeing duo will take charge of the match between Spain and Japan on Thursday.

Kick-off is at 21:00.

Gomes and Siwela are the only South African referees at this World Cup, and they will hope to leave a good impression in order to be handed more matches going forward.

The other assistant referee assigned for this encounter is none other than Lesotho finest Souru Phatsoane while Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga will be the fourth official.

GOMES TO RETIRE AFTER THIS FIFA WORLD CUP?

This could well be Gomes’ last World Cup appearance after reports emerged in October that he is set to retire from refereeing.

There was also talk that both CAF and SAFA were trying to convince the 39-year-old referee to reconsider his decision.

According to local media, CAF still has big plans for Gomes, especially with the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which will be held in 2024.
