The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed the appointment of Frans Mogashoa as the Association’s new acting technical director.

Mogashoa, the former head of SAFA ‘Coaching Education Department’, replaces Neil Tovey who was relieved of his duties as technical director in June after opting not to renew his contract with the association.

Mogashoa’s appointment means the association will now focus strongly on improving the coaching side of football in the country starting from grassroots coaches.

SAFA appoint new technical director

“Mr Mogashoa comes into this position with lots of experience and is not new in this environment. He has worked closely with Mr Tovey and his profile on the continent is well documented,” Safa CEO, Tebogo Motlanthe said.

“We need to develop a huge number of coaches in the country to help in the development of the sport at grassroots level and Mogashoa has already been doing that for Safa. He has the passion and zeal required for this demanding job.”

The well studied Mogashoa

Mogashoa recently completed a ‘FIFA Technical Directors Grassroots Training’ course adding to his already impressive instructors qualifications list. He also holds a ‘CAF PRO Licence Instructors certificate’.

Mogashoa’s journey as a coaching instructor at SAFA began in 2002 with a number of top coaches studying under him. The Polokwane born instructor has guided the likes of Owen Da Gama, Rhulani Mokwena, Ian Palmer, Kaitano Tembo, Thabo Senong and David Notoane through the years.

SAFA are yet to confirm who will fill the now vacant ‘head of coaching education’ role within the association with its new technical director set to take up office with immediate effect.

It remains to be seen when Bafana Bafana will be back in action due to uncertainties in the remainder of the 2020 international calendar as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic with Africa Cup of Nations and Fifa World Cup Qualifiers all being postponed.
