Would Hugo Broos be a coaching option at Kaizer Chiefs?

If Hugo Broos does leave Bafana Bafana, it would be an interesting left-field option if Chiefs considered him as a coaching candidate.

It’s no secret that Kaizer Chiefs are still on the look out for a permanent coach to take over after this season, which is again set to end without any silverware.

Several candidates are apparently being considered, but in a left-field option, the question has to be asked: What about Hugo Broos?

Recent reports have suggested Broos could be getting ready to move on from Bafana Bafana, with one notable story from overseas publication HLN suggesting he has already been approached by Club Brugge.

It would seem impossible that Broos would turn down overseas options if he does leave South Africa, but perhaps an unpopular opinion would suggest Chiefs should make a play for his services.

There has been some talk that these whispers have already gone on in the Chiefs boardroom, but it’s unlikely to become a realistic option.

Would Hugo Broos be a good fit at Chiefs?

Broos has undoubtedly proved his value at the helm of Bafana Bafana, and it’s clear that SAFA want to retain his services.

Now that he is familiar with South African football, one wonders whether he could ever consider coaching a local side, but there is probably too much bad blood between him and the local PSL teams.

Broos recently appeared on the Frank & Franky podcast, and highlighted his troubles with the local league.

“I will give you an example: In May, we started to prepare, we still had some friendly matches and two qualifying matches for the World Cup and then the preparations for AFCON.

“The league was scheduled until 31 December. So I decided to write a letter to the league’s Chairman to ask to stop after Christmas and there was no reply. When the fixtures came out, first thing I looked at was when they break and they only stopped 31 December.

“I wrote another letter to explain that Sundowns players feature in so many competitions, they need a break before AFCON. 14 days later we receive a response, it starts with ‘we support Bafana Bafana and the coach, but we could not change it due to the sponsors’.

“They also said they discussed it with everyone, which is absolutely not true.”

Plenty of experience

What cannot be denied is that Broos has a prolific coaching CV, and plenty of experience, and Chiefs could certainly benefit from a no-nonsense veteran coach.
