Will Gavin Hunt succeed without Mbule and Williams at SuperSport United?

Ex-Amakhosi coach Gavin Hunt is the new SuperSport United mentor after he was appointed on Thursday to try and make the club great again.

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt is the new SuperSport United mentor after he was appointed on a two-year deal to try and make the club great again.

This was some sort of homecoming for Hunt who coached Matsatsantsa between 2007 and 2012 before moving to Bidvest Wits.

Prior to his departure, Hunt had guided SuperSport United to three league titles in a row from 2008 to 2010 before adding a Nedbank Cup trophy in 2012.

Hunt had not been coaching since he was sacked by Chippa United in December 2021, and in the period leading up to his appointment at SuperSport United, the 56-year-old was linked with a number clubs, including Orlando Pirates and Royal AM.

His return to Tshwane coincided with news that Ronwen Williams could be sold to Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of the new season.

SuperSport United have already lost Sipho Mbule who joined Sundowns in June, while midfield kingpin Teboho Mokoena’s transfer to crosstown rivals was finalised in Janaury 2022.

WILL GAVIN HUNT SUCCEED WITHOUT MBULE AND WILLIAMS AT SUPERSPORT UNITED

When Mokoena left for Sundowns, both Mbule and Williams were seen as part of the SuperSport United spine going forward – but that is no longer the case.

If Williams is indeed sold to Sundowns then Hunt will be short of two players who would have been key to his rebuilding project at SuperSport United.

On the other hand, the management hasn’t brought in anyone that could plug those gaps on a permanent basis except signing players on loan from Sundowns.

Midfielder Grant Magerman has joined them on a season-long loan deal while Ricardo Goss is also reported to he on his way to SuperSport United on loan.

Now, at this stage, Hunt’s rebuilding project doesn’t look like it has a strong foundation, especially given the young squad he has at his disposal at SuperSport United.

It could take a while for Hunt to get things right but he may be forced to rebuild again in his second season if those who will be brought in are not kept beyond the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

A trophy or two in the next two seasons should be seen as an achievement for Hunt unless SueprSport United open a cheque book and get him quality players.
