Money talks, as ever.

Bafana Bafana star Elias Mokwana is a long-time target of Kaizer Chiefs. However, Sundowns are keen to scupper their move for the Sekhukhune winger.

Kaizer Chiefs target Mokwana is not expected to stay at Sekhukhune

Elias Mokwana scored his first goal for South Africa in their 1-1 draw with Andorra and he also bagged an assist in the entertaining 3-3 draw with Algeria. Now, Phakaaathi understands that the 24-year-old is on shopping lists around Mzansi.

“Look, Sundowns have been keeping tabs on him and he was discussed this season. They ended up not going for him but I know for a fact that he’s a player they have been monitoring,” a source close to the Downs technical team revealed.

“I’m not saying they have approached Sekhukhune yet, but after his performances for Bafana, I would be surprised if they don’t look in his direction again.

“From what I understand, it’s quiet now regarding approaches from other clubs but I don’t expect him to stay at Sekhukhune beyond this season.”

Sekhukhune man dazzles against Pirates

Mokwana stood out again in an excellent Sekhukhune side at the weekend in their 2-1 win over Orlando Pirates. He provided the assist for Linda Mntambo’s 51st-minute strike for Babina Noko. Lehlohonolo Seema’s men are flying with five DStv Premiership wins on the bounce. They’ve now picked up six wins from eight league encounters under their new boss.

Amakhosi need to trim their wage bill

It’s easy to envisage a situation where Khune and Dolly are no longer Chiefs players for the 2024/25 campaign. That reality illustrates a level of money mismanagement by the club but also reveals an opportunity for them to considerably trim the wage bill as neither player has been an integral part of the starting XI for the last two campaigns. Taking R1.9 Million off their monthly costs frees up funds to find players who fit the club culture. Even Zitha Kwinika, the third-highest weekly earner at the club, isn’t a guaranteed starter when everyone is fit and available. Shouldn’t the most important players be earning the best wages? A hypothetical scenario where 24-year-old Mokwana replaces Dolly would certainly represent a step in the right direction.
