On paper, Amakhosi were handed a dream draw to kick off their 2021/22 DStv Premiership season having played TS Galaxy (16th in the log), Baroka FC (6th), Mamelodi Sundowns (1st), Royal AM (4th) and Marumo Gallants (15th).

With respect to those sides, with the exception of Mamelodi Sundowns, all remaining four are considered minnows of South African top-flight football.

Yet Kaizer Chiefs only managed to beat ONE of those sides (Baroka FC). They drew with TS Galaxy and Marumo Gallants and lost (badly) to Royal AM (and Mamelodi Sundowns).

After five matches the Glamour Boys have just five points and find themselves down in a lowly 13th place in the standings.

More worrying than anything else, Amakhosi have scored just three goals to date – and conceded seven!

After playing four ‘smaller’ teams, the road can only get tougher for the Glamour Boys in the coming weeks – and it certainly does!

In order, Kaizer Chiefs’ next five matches are against AmaZulu (A), Chippa United (H), SuperSport United (A), Stellenbosch FC (H) and Orlando Pirates (H).

While the match against Chippa United stands out as the ‘easiest’ of the lot, the Chilli Boys are now coached by former Kaizer Chiefs mentor Gavin Hunt who would like nothing more than to get one over his former employers.

All of AmaZulu, SuperSport United, Stellenbosch FC and Orlando Pirates are in red-hot form and are well above Kaizer Chiefs in the log.

It’s entirely possible that Kaizer Chiefs in those matches don’t even pick up as many as the five points they achieved in their opening five clashes.

Good luck Stuart Baxter, you’re going to need it!
