Chiefs find themselves languishing in sixth place in the DStv Premiership thus far, with the squad underperforming. The team has not fared much better in the cup competitions either. Under Molefi Ntseki, they were knocked out of both the MTN8 as well as Carling Knockout Cup. That prompted the Amakhosi management to relieve the former Bafana Bafana coach of his duties.

Chiefs then redeployed Cavin Johnson as their interim coach, from his role overseeing the club’s academy. One player that started winning over favour from Ntseki was midfielder George Matlou. The former Swallows star finally found himself getting a prolonged run in the starting line up. That had not been the case during his first season at the club under former coach Arthur Zwane. Unfortunately for him, an injury has kept him out of playing a part under Johnson thus far.

It was previously reported by this publication that, Chiefs were ready to give Matlou another season. This was to reward him for his decent form before the injury. That was before a quick twist saw multiple reports suggest his time at the club was over. Now according to the latest from Soccer-Laduma, there may just be a glimmer of hope for the player at Naturena.

Still hope for Matlou at Chiefs?

“According to Siya sources at Naturena and close to midfielder George Matlou, it’s understood Kaizer Chiefs are in no hurry to decide the player’s future. There have been reports linking the former Bidvest Wits academy graduate with a potential move away from the Glamour Boys due to a lack of gametime under interim coach Cavin Johnson, but insiders say this is premature. A decision will be made closer to the end of the season, but reliable sources who are in the know have indicated Amakhosi are in no rush to retain the player or send him packing – but his injury record is a concern, they add.” Wrote the publication.

Either way, it looks as if Matlou is in a race against time to prove his worth to Chiefs management.
