Matthews is believed to have turned down the advanced of Canadian side Toronto FC, who were interested in his services. 

MLS deal turned down

Matthews who registered five goals and five assists for Swedish topflight side Varbergs-BOIS in the previous, has found himself attracting clubs from all over the world. That sort of form then went as far as convincing Toronto FC to offer up to 1 million euros according to SportBladet, which at the current euro to rand exchange would amount to R17 390 000. It is believed that a deal had already been agreed between Varbergs-BOIS and Toronto FC, who seemed to be happy with the fee.

However, in a turn of events, Matthews dropped a bombshell on all of the people involved in this deal by signalling his intentions of playing elsewhere. It is believed that the 21-year-old ended up turning Toronto FC down because his priority right now is to continue play and further develop his game in Europe. 

Matthews now showing consistency

Europe is, of course where Matthews has been for a number of years now. The speedy winger first made headlines when he made the move to German giants Borussia Dortmund who are reportedly going to receive 500k from any future deal completed by the player. After a couple of loan spell on the continent, the player would finally settle at Varbergs-BOIS where he has started to perform following gaining some stability with the links proving that his progress has not gone unnoticed.

Matthews is a former South Africa under 20 international, who is yet to make the call up to the under 23 side. If he is able to secure a move to a top league during the current transfer, he may skip the under 23’s and go straight to the senior side.
