Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune set to end 158-day drought

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is set to end his 158-day long football drought on Sunday, 22 January 2022.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is set to end his 158-day long football drought on Saturday, 22 January 2022.

In fact, come Saturday, Khune would have not played competitive football for 160 days prior, but today, Thursday, 20 January 2022, marks 158 days since he kicked a ball.

The last time Khune kicked a ball in a competitive match was when he featured for Chiefs in the MTN8 quarterfinal against Mamelodi Sundowns.

And that was on 15 August 2021 where Chiefs, despite their gallant second half performance to come from two goals down and draw 2-2 after extra time, lost to Sundowns on penalties.

KHUNE DISLODGED BY AKPEYI AT KAIZER CHIEFS

Khune, 34, had been Amakhosi’s No.1 since making his debut in 2007, but the past few seasons have seen him lose his place.

And that’s because of the injuries he suffered a couple of seasons ago – he’s no longer the same in the eyes of many football fans since then.

Now, it appears there are still those who believe in Khune as a goalkeeper hence his inclusion in the Warriors starting line-up for the DStv Compact Cup semi-final against Amabutho.

It is fair to say if Khune’s performances in the DStv Compact Cup are impressive, then chances of him reclaiming his No.1 spot at Chiefs are huge.

However, if he doesn’t, then Daniel Akpeyi, who’s at AFCON 2021 with Nigeria, may well keep it while Brandon Petersen continues to learn the ropes as Amakhosi’s No.2.
