Mamelodi Sundowns’ return to league action was an unhappy one as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Supersport United in the Tshwane Derby at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.

The victory was the visitors’ first in the fixture in six years, complicating the men in yellow’s title defence as they remain six points behind log leaders Orlando Pirates with two games in hand.

The hosts had chances early on which amounted to nothing, with Themba Zwane and Emiliano Tade getting the closest to breaking the deadlock inside the first 30 minutes.

It was right on the halfway mark where the first goal came, with Supersport edging ahead through Grant Kekana, who met a corner kick with a header, beating Kennedy Mweene.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Sundowns came out guns blazing in the second half with Phakamani Mahlambi going one-on-one with Ronwen Williams, but it was the United keeper who won the duel as he collected the ball to avert the danger.

The Bafana shot-stopper was called upon again on the hour mark as he denied Tade, who was hauled off shortly, making way for Jeremy Brockie, while Mahlambi was replaced by Sibusiso Vilakazi.

The double-change saw no reversal on fortunes for the men in red, who made things harder for themselves with some flaccid defence, as Ghampani Lungu capitalised to double the visitors’ lead with 11 minutes on the clock.

The victory sees Matsatsansa climb up to fourth on the PSL log – a point behind Sundowns, who drop to third place.
