Orlando Pirates have been blowing hot and cold this season despite a promising pre-season.

The Buccaneers looked like a team to beat when they went undefeated during the preseason in July but after their opening 2023/24 DStv Premiership defeat to Stellenbosch, many questioned Pirates’ title credentials.

On Wednesday, the Sea Robbers faced their biggest test of the season and they failed miserably. Against Mamelodi Sundowns at home, fans were expecting Jose Riveiro’s side to end Downs perfect start to the season but an early penalty from Lucas Ribeiro Costa was enough to give Sundowns all the three points at the Orlando Stadium.

Pirates had one shot on target the whole match and looked out of sorts especially in the first half.

Riveiro said after the game that a poor showing in the first half cost them the match.

“Well we’re repeating the same story again. The last time we played Sundowns here in Orlando not a good first-half, we are not ourselves, not at all,” said the Pirates coach after the game.

Sundowns developed a fantastic pressing, extremely aggressive. We had our problems to get rid of(the second ball). In the second-half, we were a different team but we are chasing one goal, it’s a different story.”

Orlando Pirates turn their attention to Stellenbosch this weekend as they look to seal a spot in the MTN8 final. The Se Robbers won the first semi-final leg 2-1 at the Athlone Stadium earlier this month.
