Orlando Pirates are targeting a move for former Kaizer Chiefs player Darrel Matsheke. However, they face competition for his signature from AmaZulu.

Orlando Pirates keen on former Kaizer Chiefs star Matsheke

According to KickOff.com, Darrel Matsheke could seal a switch from Stellenbosch to either AmaZulu or Orlando Pirates as soon as this week.

“He is still in Cape Town to finalize his settlement and will only leave after receiving his money. Part of the settlement fee is a two-month salary, which Stellenbosch is expected to pay very soon. Already two teams in the PSL have shown huge interest. The other one is in KwaZulu-Natal. He is expected to finalize the deal before the end of this week,” said the source.

Matsheke has made nine league appearances this term for Stellenbosch in an injury-hit campaign. The 25-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Winelands club in October 2023 after finding himself without a club. He also had a year-long loan stint with Swallows.

KAIZER CHIEFS TARGET ‘HAS A SOFT SPOT’ FOR ORLANDO PIRATES

24-year-old Sekhukhune United winger Elias Mokwana has shone this season with four goals and three assists in 15 league appearances. He’s in the latest Bafana squad for friendlies against Algeria and Andorra. Mokwana arrived at Babina Noko from Motsepe Foundation Championship side Platinum City Rovers in 2022. He was also on the Afcon standby list. According to The Citizen, Mokwana has always admired Chiefs. However, he has admitted to having a soft spot for Pirates as well.

According to the source, the wide attacker has always been an admirer of Chiefs, though he has a soft spot for Pirates. Right now, Chiefs are favourites if the Glamour Boys table a satisfactory offer to the player, whose desire is to be a regular starter for his country.

Upcoming Chiefs fixtures

Chiefs must wait until Saturday, March 30th when they travel to Cape Town to face Cape Town City. Amakhosi lost last season’s corresponding fixture on the final day to lose out of fourth place to the Citizens. Kickoff in that match is at 15:30. The turnaround time to their next fixture is a short one, with a clash against Stellenbosch on Tuesday 2 April at 19:30. That’s followed by a trip to Chippa on Saturday 6 April with kickoff at 15:00.
