It was revealed on Friday that, Kaizer Chiefs will play Indian second tier side Sreenidi Deccan, it now appears that arch rivals Pirates will also be in the mix. 

Pirates take on Mohammedan Sporting

This comes after news that Pirates will also be playing against Indian second tier opponents, with their match against log leaders Mohammedan Sporting. All of the above teams will be playing in what has been dubbed the Connect Tournament, which, according to FARPost, is the brain child of two companies in Niniva Capital and Bhattacharjee. Speaking to the same publication, the organizers shared more details on the upcoming tournament.

“We started planning this initiative after the raids [July 2021 riots] that happened in KZN. This is not overnight work, We’ve been working on it for over a year. Everybody came and agreed that it’s a good initiative. With football, we will bring KZN together. This is not a once-off initiative; we will do it annually and bring more teams from BRICS. industries in South Africa to do some trade fairs in India under the same initiative.” Said the CEO of Niniva Capital Sibaphiwe Khanyile

Will be looking to get back to winning ways

Pirates ended 2023 with back to back losses, a come from behind defeat against Carling Knockout Cup champions Stellenbosch FC as well as the 3-1 defeat to SuperSport United the week before. They will be itching to get themselves back on the field again with the game against Mohammedan Sporting, perfect the opportunity to gain their confidence back. They will be without six members of their squad due to AFCON commitments, however, but that does not mean they will be understrength at all.

It would then depend on coach Jose Riveiro if he wants to give some fringe players a chance against Mohammedan Sporting, or perhaps start to build momentum of his starting Pirates side. The game is set to take place on 27 January at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Ticket prices for this double header have been placed at R80.
