Already this season, Chippa have managed to sign the likes of Craig Martin and Goodman Mosele from Pirates, and are now thought to be eyeing at least one more player.

Pirates look to shed off dead wood

Pirates came in to the current DStv Premiership season already boasting a bloated squad and now it seems as if the club management are intent on cutting it down before the league resumes in mid February. A player like Souaibou Marou has been branded about as an imminent exit, with the Cameroonian striker thought to be accompanied compatriot Bienvenu Eva Nga. Eva Nga, was ironically signed from Chippa and has largely been rumoured to be returning to the club.

Both of the strikers have had very little impact since joining Pirates, with Eva Nga joining from Chippa at the beginning of the season, while Marou entered the Buccaneers ship from his native. Much was expected of Marou having been part of a Cameroon squad that featured many players playing abroad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He is now thought to be available for transfer in the current transfer window.

Chippa eye Sesane

Besides those two players, the likes of utility player Sandile Mthethwa and Richard Ofori have also been linked with exits from the Pirates camp. It has also since emerged that another defensive player in centre back Thabiso Sesane.

“Chippa United have shown interest in the Pirates defender Thabiso (Sesane), and they have made inquires about him. You know they lost one of their dependable defenders to Sundowns and they don’t want to start the second half of the season without signing a replacement. Yes, they are also talking to Sundowns about other players but it’s not in that position and that’s why they want to sign a right back to replace Zuko (Mdunyelwa). “What could make the move ease is that Pirates want him to have more game time. They indicated earlier in the season that a loan move would be idle for him to have more game time and gain experience. Just like they did midfield star with Sandile Mthethwa last season. He also went to Chippa on loan and look talks how it turned out? He gained valuable experience and game time. So that would help Sesane as well,” said a source to Soccer-Laduma.

Win-win situation?

On paper it looks like it would be a good move for all parties, with Pirates clearly still believing in Sesane’s abilities and the player needing experience at the top level to prove those abilities. Chippa could end up benefitting from that too.
