ORLANDO PIRATES 3-1 INDEPENDIENTE

The Spanish pre-season continued in Marbella on Saturday. The Sea Robbers locked horns with Ecuador’s Independiente where we saw complete dominance from the Soweto giants.

After going down 1-0 in the first half against the run of play, Pirates responded in the second with three goals.

The Cameroonian striker, Souaibou Marou, scored his first for the club on 50 minutes, followed by Patrick Masangwanyi on 59 minutes as well as Fortune Makaringe on 64 minutes.

As you would expect in a second pre-season game, coach Jose Riveiro fielded two different teams for the first and second half.

FIRST HALF LINE-UP: Ofori, Shandu, Sibisi, Maela, Mako, Timm, Mosele, Ndlondlo, Saleng, Ratomo, Lepasa.

SECOND HALF LINE-UP: Buthelezi, Monyane, Mthethwa, Xoki, Hotto, Baloni, Monare, Makaringe, Masangwanyi, Marou, Nga.

FIVE PLAYERS THAT IMPRESSED AGAINST MACCABI TEL AVIV

As The South African website reported on Thursday, the Soweto giants snatched a 1-0 victory over Tel Aviv in Marbella, Spain.

New boy Patrick Masangwanyi smashed in the only goal of the game in the 40th minute, while Sipho Chaine delivered a wonderful save on 44 minutes to secure the clean sheet.

Having had the privilege to watch the game, here are five players that stood out…

  1. Sandile Mthethwa – Following Maccabi’s stronger second display that pinned the Buccaneers back, the lanky central defender was the most-composed defender with clean passing and ball-carries out of the pressure.
  2. Paseka Mako – The dynamic left-back was the most energetic player on the pitch. One moment saw Mako press Maccabi’s central defenders and the goalkeeper before sprinting back to his number three position.
  3. Thabang Monare – Pirates dominated the first half because of Monare’s aggression, pressing and technical qualities.
  4. Makhehlene Makhaula – He was as classy as Monare in the middle of the park.
  5. Evidence Makgopa – Did not enjoy enough space to attack but was marvelous in defending from the top. He has certainly learned from Terrence Dzvukamanja.
